Wild Sex on Valentines Day

Can you think of a better way to spend Valentines Day?

This morning I was in Vancouver on Breakfast TV to talk about “romance” in the animal kingdom. We discussed stickleback fish, foam nesting tree frogs, orangutans, and nudibranchs!

Mike Lloyd has obviously been paying attention to my posts on social media, since he sent in a tweet asking about the extremely well-endowed barnacle!

The past couple weeks I have been sharing some wild sex facts on both Twitter and Facebook. Some highlights:

Peahens will often select a male based on the choices of others. If a male can deceive a female into believing that he’s been chosen, by making vocalizations to give the impression he’s copulating in the bushes, it can have the effect of drawing more females in for a visit.

Dating advice from a female orangutan:
Steal his food.
Take it right out of his hands or mouth.
Even if you’re not hungry.
If he reacts negatively, he’s not the one for you.

Can you guess what animal has the largest penis? (In terms of penis to body size ratio)

Answer: the barnacle!

If you loved the weird and wacky sex facts I’ve shared so far this month, you should check out my book “Wild Sex: The Science Behind Mating In The Animal Kingdom“.

Happy Valentines Day!
